There’s an interesting book on this subject, Self Made Man by Norah Vincent. She’s a journalist who went under cover and lived as a man for 18 months. She joined an all male bowling league, got a job in a male dominated profession, lived in a monastery, went to a men’s therapy group, and she dated women.
What I found so fascinating was that she could see and explain things that I could not, because they’re invisible to me. (I’m trying to avoid saying ‘take for granted.’) How ironic is it that it takes a lesbian, living as a man, to explain a ‘man’s world’ to another man?
Her writing is very fair and even-handed. I recommend the book to everyone. Both men and women can learn a lot from it. It turns out the a ‘man’s world’ is not everything it’s cracked up to be.
